What is Fancoil ? This system is essentially a completely watery system. Hot water and chilled water prepared in a center are distributed to fancoil devices distributed inside the building. Hot water is produced in a hot water boiler and cold water is produced in a chiller. Fancoil devices are elements that contain a fan and a serpentine as a heat transfer surface. The air, which is taken from the room with the help of a fan and heated or cooled by passing over the serpentines, is blown back into the room. If cold water passes through the serpentine, cooling is done, if hot water passes, heating is done. The water returning to the center with the return pipes is reheated/cooled and circulated here. Circulation pumps are used for this purpose. It is especially preferred in multi-room buildings and applications where there is not enough volume to pass ducts. It is especially used in hotels, hospitals, offices and high-rise residences. Fancoil units can be placed in front of windows, inside suspended ceilings or under the ceiling and inside the flooring. Accordingly, different fancoil types have been developed.
In short, the devices that blow hot when necessary and cold according to the water in it are called fancoils. In the device, which blows with the help of a fan, the fluid that enters passes through the capillary pipes and blows with the fan located just behind. It is the last device used to heat or cool a living space without connecting the fan coil unit to the duct system. Indoor air moves on the coil, warming and cooling the air without pushing the living space out. If the fluid inside is hot, blowing is done hot, if it is cold, blowing is done cold. . It is processed in two types, 2 pipes and 4 pipes. It is the type with a single coil on the 2-pipe fancoil, it is preferred because it is cheap. It can only do one of the heating or cooling processes, especially during the heat transition period, it causes great difficulties in the operation. The 4-pipe fancoil is the type with 2 coils on it, it performs both heating and cooling at the same time. It provides excellent comfort especially during transition periods and the transition is very easy.
WHAT IS FANCOIL AND WHAT ARE THE FEATURES?
Especially the fancoil system is a system that works with water. The basic working principle of this system is the device that blows hot when it receives hot water and cold when it receives cold water. Fancoil is very similar to air conditioner in operation. Just like the air conditioner, it can perform both cooling and heating operations. The fan coil system can be selected with or without cassette, floor or concealed ceiling type, pressurized type, high wall type or cassette four-way blowing type. When choosing a fancoil, you should choose the fancoil according to its intended use. There are 2 types of fancoils. Fancoil devices are based on the principle of conditioning the filtered air by passing it over a cold or hot surface (coil) with the help of a fan. With fancoil devices, the temperature (at the same time, humidity) of the ambient air is controlled. These devices provide cooling in summer and heating in winter. Air movement is provided in the environment. Air quality is improved by filtering the ambient air and optionally mixing it with the outside air.
As mentioned above, fan coil types can be selected as cassette/non-cassette, floor/concealed ceiling type, pressurized type, high wall type or cassette four-way blowing type in order to respond to the architectural selection and application diversity. In addition, they can be of single serpentine (for 2-pipe system) or double-coil (for 4-pipe system) type according to the selected fan coil system. In the two-pipe fan coil system, there is a single coil in the unit. Pipes contain either hot or cold water. Accordingly, either heating or cooling can be done. In the four-pipe system, there are two separate coils in the fan-coil device. There is both hot and cold water in the system. Depending on whether the unit is currently heating or cooling, hot or cold water is allowed to circulate through the relevant coil with valves.
System features
- Control is generally done using room thermostats.
- It has the opportunity to adjust the speed of its motor, thus providing convenience in capacity control.
- Frequency controlled circulation pump usage saves energy
- Pipe insulation is much simpler than duct insulation.
- There are no leaks in the ducts in the fancoil system.
- Heat losses in ducts due to large surface areas are not experienced in fancoil systems.
- Easier to regulate the piping system
- No need for large shaft cutouts in the fancoil system.
What is Fancoil and Technical details
There is no need for ventilation in a standard fancoil system, heating and cooling can be done. In order to eliminate this deficiency, 2 applications are valid in the system. With the mixed device placed on the outer wall, the air is taken from the outside directly by each unit. With a central ducted ventilation system, the fresh air system required for the system is added. The name given to this system is the primary air fan coil system, the systems are both air and water, and the humidity control performance is low. In both systems, the air circulation in the room belongs to the room only. Therefore, there are no easy-to-pass problems such as air passage between rooms, odor and smoke.
What is a fancoil? When choosing this system, first of all, it is necessary to pay attention to the easy removal feature of the filters. In cassette type devices, it should be preferred that the filter can be changed without removing it. In addition, the condensation pans should be checked for clogging at certain intervals, this is recommended to prevent bacterial growth. It is a disadvantage that the devices that need to be maintained are in the usage area. For this reason, maintenance should be done by expert personnel out of working hours. In ceiling type models, care should be taken not to pollute the air when changing the filter. If the device is placed in front of the glass, it should be placed in such a way that it does not disturb its surroundings and the air blowing direction should be designed accordingly. Angle bladed linear grilles are used to direct air in concealed floor fan coil types.

The main structure of the device consists of fan, coil, main and external drain pans, filter and body. The main drain pan is used to drain the condensed water in the coil. The internal structure of a floor fan coil can be seen as shown in the figure.
Various types of fancoil devices are available for different purposes of use, architectural situation, project design, cost and comfort needs. They can be selected with or without cassette, floor or ceiling type, pressurized type, hydronic cassette type to respond to architectural selection and application diversity. In addition, they can be single coil (for two pipe system) or double coil (for four pipe system), additional or fully electric heater, outdoor air or indoor air type, depending on the system selected. In the two-pipe fan coil system, there is a single coil in the unit. Pipes contain either hot or cold water. Accordingly, either heating or cooling can be done. In the four-pipe system, there are two separate serpentines in the fancoil device. There is both hot and cold water in the system.
Depending on whether the unit is currently heating or cooling, hot or cold water is allowed to circulate through the relevant coil with valves. Especially pressurized type fan coils are designed to be connected to the duct and to meet high external static pressure losses. Hydronic cassette type fan coils, on the other hand, have a very aesthetic appearance and can also be used in modular type suspended ceiling applications. Thanks to the drainage pump, the condensate can be removed forcibly without the need for a slope.
